Handwriting analysis is probably as old as writing. It was practiced in ancient Rome. Emperor Nero was said to have consulted handwriting analysts to discover the trustworthiness of certain men. Historian Suetonious looked at Emperor's Augustus' handwriting to determine his personality. In eleventh century China, philosopher Kuo Jo Hsu wrote that the noble-minded can be discerned from the vulgar by studying handwriting. Shakespeare said "Give me the handwriting of a woman, and I will tell you her character." Edgar Allan Poe was fascinated by handwriting analysis. When Gainsborough painted, he would attach a letter written by the model to his easel. He believed that handwriting was the portrait of the spirit, and looking at the writing while he painted helped him capture the model's essence.
